Over a month ago I paid my first ever visit to Milan for the annual International Salone del Mobile- Milan Furniture Fair. Taking every single preconception of the city into account I wasn’t sure what to expect, conversations about the city generally go along the lines of ‘Oh yes Milan...nice...very industrial...’ Prepared for disappointment, I was immediately won over by the city on my second day thanks to my visit to Spazio Rossana Orlandi, the incredible gallery space cum design store avec courtyard restaurant. The store resembles Ollivander Wand shop from Harry Potter- it is covered wall to wall in small boxes housing hundreds of varieties of wallpaper.
Tom Dixon’s designs are for sale alongside vintage Ercol, while the basement showcases young designer and recent University graduate’s collections.

Out in the busy courtyard cafe local women volunteer their time to create tasty homemade meals, with all proceeds from food sales going to ‘Boys and Girls With Problems’ (read: recovering drug and alcohol addicts). Out here Frédérique Morrel created an instillation of life sized creatures- ranging from frogs to deer- out of found needlework. Have a look at the machine-gun wielding skeleton riding a horse.
But wait...a skeleton that cares about its appearance?
And the false eyelashes weren’t exclusive to the jockey...
